Pastor Dana Runestad.jpgSt. John's Plymouth is in the process of calling a new rector to walk with us on the next leg of our journey. During our transition, it is with gratitude and excitement we announce that Pastor Dana Runestad will be joining St. John’s Plymouth as our interim rector, beginning on October 9.

Ordained in the Lutheran Church in 1986, Pastor Dana joins – or rejoins – our St. John’s community from her most recent position as both Transitional Pastor at Lord of Light Lutheran Church in Ann Arbor and Acting Executive Director of Lutheran Campus Ministry at the University of Michigan.

To many of you, Pastor Dana will be a familiar face.  Of the nine parish assignments she has had since ordination, she looks back at the years she served as Assistant to the Rector at St. John’s (from 2001 to 2004) as her happiest years in ministry.  And prior to that, she and her family were members here at St. John’s.

You will hear much more of Pastor Dana’s story in the days to come. Today, we want you to know how gracefully and completely she fulfills the three “must haves” that guided our search:

  • Significant experience and training in serving congregations in transition
  • Passion and skill in preaching, spiritual formation and pastoral care
  • Love and reverence for the liturgy and traditions of the Episcopal Church.

Though ordained in the Lutheran tradition (like her father and great-grandfather before her), she refers to herself as “a closet Episcopalian.”

Happily, the “full communion” between our two denominations paves the way for her to return to St. John’s to celebrate, preach, teach and walk with us on our transition journey.

Since 2001, the Episcopal Church has been “in full communion” with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), meaning that while each retains its autonomy and structures, our two traditions work together for joint mission and witness in the world, and clergy and laity may move freely between the two denominations.

Many of Pastor Dana’s previous parish assignments have involved leading congregations in transition. She has told us that she delights in helping congregations explore the ways to “be who you are, see what you have, and do what matters to God.” In her introductory letter to the vestry, she wrote that hearing the news of St. John’s search for an interim “more than tugged at her heart.”

We are blessed that today, her gift for transition ministry can come together with her heart’s desire. This will indeed be a joyous homecoming for Pastor Dana, her husband Barry Rabe and their two grown sons.

While change always brings challenge, this is an exciting time for our congregation, and we look forward to working together to write the next chapter in our faithful story.

Kate has more than 14 years of business and nonprofit fund development experience in human services and arts and cultural organizations. In 2016 Kate chose to leave fundraising to work for her stepmother's company, ezbake technologies, where she serves as the VP of Sales and Marketing. While this position is challenging, it is also flexible and allows for part time employment in addition to her work with her family business. Kate found she missed interacting with people, especially those with a passion for social justice, and for that is happy to be working at St. John's Episcopal Church.

Kate has an undergraduate degree in voice performance and political science from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree in communication from Eastern Michigan University. Kate is committed to her community and serves on the St. Joseph Mercy Holiday Ball Committee, is the chair of the Leslie Science Center's Mayfly Gala, participates with her horse for Camp Casey, an organization that helps chronically and terminally ill children with a horse camp experience, and is a board member of the Arbor Opera Theater. Kate is married to Guy Conti, an attorney, and is proudly owned by a pack of spitz dogs and her family's 19hh Percheron draft horse.
