Mission Outreach

Outreach at St. John's is dedicated to the task of returning to God a portion of all the time, talent, and treasure that we have been given by God.  We do this by supporting a number of organizations locally, nationally, and internationally.  Some of these organizations that we support with our time and talent are shown below.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Crossroads2.jpg

This year St. John’s and St. David’s together will feed a turkey dinner with stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans and a slice of pie to about 700 guests at Crossroads. This is no small undertaking, and you can help in a number of ways.

TURKEYS

We will need 75 cooked turkeys. Sign-ups will be on the bulletin board in the hallway. Those who sign up will receive instructions explaining prep details and a due date. Take advantage, the price of turkeys is at its lowest right now!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We realize that the date is close to Christmas, and we are all busy with our own last-minute preparations, but we cannot get this done without your help!

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 23, we need a minimum of 10 to 12 people at St. John’s from 9am-12pm for a variety of jobs: making stuffing, packaging the turkey to transport to Crossroads and putting together utensil packages.

SUNDAY, DEC. 24 CHRISTMAS EVE, we need a minimum of 20 people at Crossroads from 9am-12pm. We will be making gravy, green beans & mashed potatoes. The turkey and stuffing will be warmed up & pies put in containers. We are finished when St. David’s arrives at noon.

ADOPT A PIE

This year because it’s so close to Christmas we are asking for donations so that we can purchase pies from Costco. Just check “yes I’ll donate” on the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board. Make your check payable to SJP, write “pies” in the memo line and drop it in the collection plate. Any amount is appreciated!

IF EVERYONE PITCHES IN PROVIDING A TURKEY OR 2, DONATES MONEY FOR PIES AND/OR VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME, WE CAN MAKE CERTAIN 700 LESS FORTUNATE PEOPLE DO NOT GO TO BED HUNGRY ON CHRISTMAS EVE.

Miss Millie's Medical Loan Closet

This ministry began in memory of a wonderful woman and Church member, Mrs. Mildred (Millie) Caroline Hein. Her daughter started the loan closet with items used by Miss Millie to aide her in living at home with family during her final years. Thanks to our donors, the loan closet has grown with a wide variety of medical items (wheelchairs, walkers, shower chairs, commodes, etc.) for home use. Items are available to anyone in the Plymouth/Canton community who needs them, preferrably for short term use) and are to be returned when they are no longer needed.

If you or a family members are in need of medical equipment, please call the church office at 734-453-0190 or email the Parish Administator. The Parish Administrator will notify the Miss Millie's volunteers of your request. A Miss Millie's volunteer will contact you by phone within 24 hours.

If you have medical equipment to donate, please call the church office at 734-453-0190 or email and we will determine if we can utilize the items you have to donate, or we can help you with other resources if we are unable to use your donations.

NOTE: For phone numbers of the contacts listed on this page, please consult St. John's phone directory, or call the parish office at 734-453-0190.

CROP Walk

The annual CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) Walk, sponsored by Church World Service, takes place each Fall. Walkers from St. John's and several other area churches walk a two or four mile route.  Walkers raise money to fight poverty and hunger around the world by securing pledges from sponsors.  For more information on CROP Walk, contact the parish office or visit the Church World Service website.

Crossroads Soup Kitchen and Social Services

Three Sundays each year, a team of parishioners prepares and serves a meal at the Crossroads Soup Kitchen in Detroit. Other parishioners volunteer in the social service offices on a regular basis to assist clients with food and clothing distribution, medical prescriptions, obtaining proper IDs and other related services. To volunteer, please contact Dick Bass here or see the Crossroads website for more information.

Gleaners Community Food Bank

Three times a year, a team of parishioners packs boxes of food and necessities for underprivileged families at Gleaners Community Food Bank in Detroit. To volunteer, please contact Irene Jarrell here or see the Gleaners website for more information.
